America’s Tribune Of Liberty In Chains

It doesn’t get any more hideous than this: In the waning days of his misbegotten tenure, New York City Mayor DeBlasio and his cronies had America’s tribune of liberty carted off in chains yesterday. As the New York Post noted with respect to the statute donated to the city by a Thomas Jefferson admirer in 1833:

They then lowered the massive structure down the stairs leading to the building’s first-floor rotunda with a pulley system and ushered the Founding Father out the back door.

The statue of Thomas Jefferson was taken out of City Hall today

Here’s the thing. Thomas Jefferson was not only the author of the Declaration of Independence, but among the Founding Fathers he was the foremost opponent of state power and ever fearful of government’s tendency for aggrandizement. He believed, therefore, that society flourishes economically, socially, culturally and spiritually most fulsomely when private liberty and enterprise are maximized and the encroachments of the state are shackled by a robust constitutional regime.
